As every derby at the Bernabéu tends to be, the clash between Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid was intense from the very first whistle. The two Madrid rivals faced off in a five-goal thriller, with the hosts securing a 3-2 victory on Sunday, March 22.
The atmosphere was already electric long before kickoff. Fans welcomed both team buses with loud chants, and the tension only grew as the players entered the pitch. Supporters from both sides filled the stadium with provocative songs, boos, and nonstop energy during Matchday 29 of La Liga.
Real Madrid created their first big chance just two minutes into the game. Vinicius Jr. drove down the left side and found Brahim Díaz, who sent a low cross toward the edge of the box. Dani Carvajal arrived for the shot, but goalkeeper Juan Musso made an excellent save. Six minutes later, Madrid nearly opened the scoring again. Federico Valverde burst forward on the right, beat Ruggeri with a brilliant move, and fired a low shot that hit the right post.
Atlético responded immediately, turning the match into a fast and open battle. Just one minute after Madrid hit the post, Antoine Griezmann broke down the right and delivered a precise pass to Marcos Llorente inside the area. Llorente finished with his left foot, but Andriy Lunin managed to stop the shot in two attempts.
Around the 20-minute mark, Vinicius Jr. became the center of attention. First, after a corner kick, the Brazilian fired from inside the box, but Giuliano Simeone blocked the effort with his body. Moments later, Vinicius cut inside from the left and curled a shot just over the bar. In another attacking move, he drove toward the middle and was brought down by Johnny Cardoso, who received a yellow card. Valverde took the free kick, and after the ball deflected off the wall, Musso reacted quickly to make another save.
Atlético finally opened the scoring in the 33rd minute. Ruggeri crossed low from the left side, Giuliano Simeone cleverly flicked the ball with his heel, and Ademola Lookman finished into the back of the net to give the visitors the lead.
Real Madrid came out stronger in the second half and quickly turned the game around. Brahim Díaz dribbled into the area and was brought down by Dávid Hancko, leading to a penalty. Vinicius Jr. stepped up and calmly sent Musso the wrong way to level the score.
Only four minutes later, Madrid completed the comeback through Federico Valverde. The midfielder pressed Atlético’s defense, stole the ball from José Giménez, and finished past the goalkeeper to make it 2-1.
But in a derby, momentum can change instantly. Atlético equalized again with a stunning strike from Nahuel Molina. The defender received the ball on the right side and unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box into the top corner, leaving Lunin with no chance.
The visitors barely had time to celebrate before Vinicius Jr. produced another moment of brilliance. The Brazilian picked up the ball on the left wing, cut inside, and curled a beautiful shot into the far corner to restore Madrid’s lead at 3-2.
In the 75th minute, Real Madrid suffered a major setback. After a hard foul on Álex Baena, Valverde received a straight red card. The decision sparked strong reactions from the home crowd, and although the play was reviewed by VAR, the referee kept the original call. Madrid had to hold on with ten men for the remainder of the match.
The tension stayed high until the final whistle. Five minutes after the red card, Julián Álvarez fired a powerful shot from outside the area that smashed against the post. Madrid fans could finally breathe in relief as the ball stayed out.
After the important win, Real Madrid will now prepare for their next La Liga match against Mallorca on Saturday, April 4, away from home.
